Precision force/torque sensors measure forces and rotational moments (torques) applied to robotic systems with high accuracy, enabling robots to interact with objects and environments with appropriate force levels. These sensors typically use strain gauges, piezoelectric elements, or optical sensing to detect minute deformations caused by applied forces, converting them into electrical signals. The sensors provide six-degree-of-freedom measurements, detecting forces and torques in all three spatial dimensions.

Applications include robotic assembly where precise force control prevents damage to delicate components, robotic surgery where force feedback enables surgeons to feel tissue resistance, collaborative robots that need to detect human contact for safety, and industrial automation requiring force-controlled operations. The sensors enable robots to perform tasks like inserting parts, polishing surfaces, or handling fragile objects that require careful force management. Advanced sensors provide real-time feedback at high frequencies, enabling closed-loop force control that allows robots to adapt their actions based on tactile feedback, making robotic interactions more natural and safe.
