eVTOL Aircraft (Flying Cars)

SkyDrive conducted Japan's first public eVTOL demo flights at Osaka Expo 2025 and is expanding to US markets with showroom partners in Florida.

SkyDrive Inc., a Toyota-backed eVTOL manufacturer, demonstrated its SD-05 aircraft at the 2025 Osaka World Expo — Japan's first public manned eVTOL flights. The company has since been selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for Phase I eVTOL implementation alongside Joby Aviation, conducted extended summer demonstration flights in Osaka, and expanded to the US market with showroom partnerships in Florida and South Carolina.

Japan's eVTOL strategy is distinctive for its integration with existing transport infrastructure. SkyDrive participated in the Japan Mobility Show 2025 Railway × eVTOL exhibition, showcasing 'touch and go' operations connecting rail stations to eVTOL pads. Japan's dense urban geography — where helicopters are impractical and ground transport is congested — creates ideal conditions for short-range urban air mobility.

The regulatory framework is advancing: Japan's Civil Aviation Bureau has issued type certification basis for SkyDrive's SD-05, and Soracle Corporation has become Japan's first dedicated flying car operator. While SkyDrive is smaller than US competitors (Joby, Archer) and China's EHang, the combination of government support, Expo publicity, and practical urban deployment strategy positions Japan as a serious contender in advanced air mobility.
