Tata Electronics is building India's first modern semiconductor fabrication plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region, Gujarat. The facility, approved in February 2024, is being built with technology partnership from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan. The fab will target 28nm and above process nodes — not cutting-edge by global standards, but crucial for automotive, industrial, and IoT applications that represent the majority of global chip demand.
The project represents the Tata Group's massive bet on India's semiconductor future. Tata is investing billions, with the Indian government providing substantial subsidies (reportedly 50% of capital expenditure). Phase 1 includes 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space. The timeline has been pushed from mid-2025 to April 2026, reflecting the complexity of semiconductor facility construction.
This fab is strategically significant even at 28nm. The global shortage of mature-node chips during COVID-19 disrupted automotive and industrial supply chains worldwide. India's fab would reduce dependence on Taiwan and China for these critical chips. Tata Electronics is also building a separate semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam, creating a more complete domestic semiconductor value chain.
