Guarantee of Origin Certification Scheme

Australia's Guarantee of Origin scheme, live since November 2025, provides blockchain-verified emissions accounting for hydrogen, green metals, and renewable electricity — enabling premium pricing in export markets.
Back to PolisView interactive version

Australia's Guarantee of Origin (GO) scheme, which commenced on 3 November 2025, is a voluntary government-operated framework for emissions accounting and certification of products including renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and low-emission commodities. The scheme provides verified, traceable certification that allows producers to demonstrate the renewable or low-carbon credentials of their products to international buyers, enabling premium pricing and market access where carbon intensity determines trade terms.

As global trade increasingly incorporates carbon border adjustments (the EU's CBAM is operational, other jurisdictions are following), verified emissions accounting becomes a competitive necessity rather than a marketing choice. Australian exporters of hydrogen, ammonia, green iron, aluminium, and critical minerals need credible, internationally recognized certification to access premium green commodity markets. The GO scheme provides this infrastructure.

The strategic importance extends beyond individual products. A robust, government-backed certification system positions Australia as a trusted supplier in an era of green protectionism, where unverified carbon claims risk trade barriers. The scheme's design accommodates future products and sectors, making it extensible as new green industries emerge. Its launch alongside Australia's hydrogen and critical minerals export strategies creates an integrated package of production capability plus market-access certification.
