AI Companion Boundaries

Frameworks governing emotional attachment and memory retention in persistent AI game companions
Back to PixelsView interactive version

AI companions that remember conversations, mirror player moods, and persist across seasons blur lines between utility, friendship, and therapy. Boundary frameworks define how much companions can pry into personal lives, how memories decay or transfer, and what disclosures are required when AI is simulating empathy. Designers build consent flows, emotional “safety rails,” and escalation triggers that route players to human support if biometric or chat signals suggest distress.

Studios collaborate with psychologists to set limits on 24/7 access, enforce cool-down periods, or provide “relationship reset” buttons so parasocial bonds don’t become draining. Regulators eye youth protections, demanding that AI friends clearly label themselves, avoid nudging minors toward monetization, and respect parental controls. Multiplayer games must also address jealousy or harassment when AI allies appear to favor certain players—leading to shared guidelines for NPC transparency and community norms.

TRL 4 governance structures include memory dashboards, opt-in intimacy levels, and data portability so players can delete or export conversations. Industry groups like the Open Metaverse Alliance and IEEE are drafting companion ethics codes, while neuro-rights advocates push for laws preventing emotional manipulation via AI. Establishing these boundaries early will keep synthetic friendships enriching rather than exploitative.
