The Emirates Mars Mission, known as the Hope Probe, launched in July 2020 and entered Mars orbit in February 2021, making the UAE the fifth entity to reach Mars and the first Arab nation. The mission was extended through 2028 following its initial success. Hope studies the Martian atmosphere and climate dynamics, providing unique data on seasonal weather patterns and atmospheric escape processes.

The mission's scientific value is complemented by its institutional impact: the UAE Space Agency and Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre built genuine aerospace engineering capabilities by partnering with the University of Colorado. This knowledge-transfer model — where Emirati engineers worked alongside US counterparts rather than simply purchasing a turnkey spacecraft — created lasting human capital.

Gulf space ambitions are expanding: Saudi Arabia has established its own space commission, the UAE is planning follow-on missions including an asteroid belt exploration, and the region's investment in satellite manufacturing and earth observation is growing. Space serves as a powerful symbolic and practical driver of STEM education and national identity in post-oil economies.
