The Pinaka is India's indigenously developed multi-barrel rocket launcher system, designed by DRDO and manufactured by multiple Indian companies. The system has evolved through several variants: Pinaka Mk-I (range 40 km), Pinaka Mk-II (range 60 km with guided rockets), and the extended-range variant (90 km). A single Pinaka launcher can fire a salvo of 12 rockets in 44 seconds, saturating an area target with devastating effect.
Pinaka was first used operationally during the Kargil War (1999) and has been continuously upgraded since. The system is now in large-scale production, with multiple regiments equipped across the Indian Army. The guided Pinaka Mk-II variant, with GPS/INS guidance, achieves precision comparable to guided artillery at a lower cost per round than conventional artillery shells at similar ranges.
Pinaka has become one of India's most successful defense export products. Armenia was an early customer, and interest has been expressed by countries across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The system's combination of high firepower, relatively low cost, and proven reliability makes it competitive with established systems like the BM-30 Smerch and M270 MLRS. Pinaka's export success validates India's capability to produce competitive military hardware for the global market.
