The Akash missile system is India's indigenously developed medium-range surface-to-air missile, designed by DRDO and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). With a range of 25 km (Akash) to 35+ km (Akash-NG), the system can engage multiple aerial targets simultaneously including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. The system uses a combination of command guidance and active radar terminal homing.
Akash has been deployed operationally with both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. During Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Akash and other indigenous air defense systems were deployed in real operational conditions, proving their combat readiness. This operational validation significantly boosted international confidence in the system, leading to increased export inquiries.
The Akash system exemplifies India's defense indigenization strategy. Developed over two decades with significant investment, it now provides a credible air defense capability at a fraction of the cost of Western equivalents like the Patriot or THAAD systems. The next-generation Akash-NG (New Generation) features improved range, accuracy, and a more mobile platform. India's ability to produce, deploy, and operationally validate a modern air defense system positions it as a credible defense supplier for countries seeking alternatives to US, Russian, or Chinese systems.
