The UAE's Halcon subsidiary (under EDGE Group) has developed and manufactures a range of precision-guided munitions including the Thunder family of guidance kits for MK81/MK82/MK84 bombs, the Desert Sting family of guided glide weapons, the WSM-1 precision missile (debuted 2025), and the SkyKnight anti-radiation missile. These represent the first indigenously-designed and manufactured precision munitions to emerge from the Gulf region.
Precision munitions are among the most tightly controlled defense technologies globally. Gulf states historically imported all guided weapons from the US, France, or UK — subject to end-user agreements, political conditions, and delivery timelines controlled by the supplier. Indigenous production means the UAE can maintain and expand its precision strike arsenal without foreign government approval, a decisive shift in military sovereignty.
Halcon's munitions are already being exported to multiple countries, making the UAE a net exporter of precision weapons rather than purely a buyer. The Thunder guidance kit is particularly significant — it converts unguided 'dumb' bombs into GPS/INS-guided precision weapons at a fraction of the cost of purpose-built guided munitions. Combined with EDGE's loitering munitions (QX-1/2/3 series) and the Shadow family of jet-powered UAVs, the UAE has built a remarkably complete indigenous strike ecosystem in under a decade.
