EPRI

We collaborated with EPRI to create a technology radar that features crucial signals of energy innovation tailored for utility companies. Our role involved providing essential research data and assisting in structuring a collaborative feedback loop with external stakeholders. This process captured both qualitative and quantitative assessments from industry experts, allowing for a visually rich representation of the potential impact of each technology across multiple dimensions. The radar not only highlights key findings but also indicates which energy technologies could shape the future of the sector.

Our Work

  • Tracked essential energy innovation signals relevant for utility companies.
  • Delivered comprehensive research data and insights.
  • Developed a feedback process to engage external stakeholders.
  • Assessed technology impact across six key metrics, providing a multidimensional view of future energy trends.

Impact

  • Qualitative and quantitative assessments gave strategic edge to the research.
  • Provided overview of energy technologies shaping the future of the sector.
  • Tagging system alllowed for visualizing the intersections between innovation and regulation.
  • Hit the ground running with joint research efforts.
Technology Research

To accelerate EPRI’s project kickoff, we conducted an initial sweep using our technology database. This preliminary research, supplemented by EPRI’s domain expertise, provided a solid foundation. The final delivery was enhanced through a customized CMS platform, allowing EPRI to continue expanding their research autonomously.

Data Architecture

In addition to organizing the custom metrics, we integrated regulatory barriers as a many-to-many tag system, enabling stakeholders to easily identify common regulatory challenges. This system allows users to visualize intersections between innovation and regulatory hurdles, enhancing their understanding of industry constraints.

Custom Metrics

We helped EPRI design a custom survey to gather external stakeholder assessments, crowdsourcing technology selection and evaluating the relevance of each entry. By narrowing down internal metrics from over a dozen to six core metrics, we ensured consistent data visualization. In addition to Technology Readiness Level (TRL), each technology was evaluated across categories such as Market Disruption Potential, Economic Impact, Socio-Political Impact, Environmental Impact, Ease of Implementation, and Time to Commercialization.
