Manus built an AI agent system that goes beyond chatbots: it can browse the web, write and execute code, create documents, and complete multi-step workflows autonomously. The system attracted millions of users and drew acquisition interest from multiple US tech giants.

Meta acquired Manus in December 2025 to boost its AI agent capabilities. The deal required Chinese regulatory review, highlighting the geopolitical sensitivity of cross-border AI acquisitions. Manus was Singapore-based but founded by Chinese engineers.

The Manus story illustrates a pattern: Chinese AI talent builds breakthrough products that Western companies then acquire. This talent pipeline persists despite US-China tech tensions, because the underlying research community remains globally connected.
