Naver Webtoon, launched in 2004, didn't just digitize comics — it created an entirely new content format. The vertical-scroll webtoon, designed for mobile screens, replaced the page-turn paradigm that had defined comics for a century. Webtoon Entertainment (the US-listed global arm) now operates in 150+ countries with over 170 million monthly active users. In August 2025, Webtoon announced a landmark partnership with Disney to build a dedicated digital comics platform featuring Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney properties alongside Webtoon originals — a deal that sent Webtoon's stock up 81%.
The platform's innovation goes beyond format. Webtoon pioneered the 'creator economy' model for comics: anyone can publish, the platform provides tools and distribution, and successful creators earn revenue through ads and a 'wait or pay' freemium model. This open platform approach generated an entire content ecosystem — over 100,000 creator-published series — that feeds adaptation pipelines for K-dramas, anime, films, and games. Tower of God, Solo Leveling, and True Beauty all originated as webtoons before becoming global entertainment properties.
Webtoon's strategic significance is as a Korean-origin content format that became the global standard. Every major competitor — Kakao's Tapas, Tappytoon, Lezhin, and even Japanese manga platforms — now offers vertical-scroll digital comics because Webtoon proved the format works. Korea controls the dominant platform, the creator tools, the AI-assisted translation pipeline, and the IP adaptation ecosystem. It's rare for a country to invent a content medium and maintain platform dominance — Korea did it with webtoons.
