Afrobeats — a genre originating from Nigeria and Ghana — has become one of the most streamed music genres globally, driven by digital production and distribution technology. Artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, and Rema produce internationally competitive music using home studios equipped with DAWs (digital audio workstations), plugins, and laptop-based production setups. Distribution through platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube has eliminated the traditional gatekeepers that kept African music out of global markets.

The technology stack is democratized: a laptop, a microphone, FL Studio or Logic Pro, and a DistroKid or TuneCore account can launch a global music career from Lagos, Accra, or Nairobi. Nigerian producers have developed distinctive sound design techniques — the interplay of highlife, dancehall, and electronic production — that define the Afrobeats sound. Platforms like Audiomack and Boomplay (China-backed but Africa-focused) provide additional distribution channels.

Afrobeats represents Nigeria's most successful cultural export and demonstrates the power of digital tools to bypass traditional industry infrastructure. The genre generated an estimated $1 billion in revenue in 2023. Its success is creating an ecosystem: recording studios, sound engineering schools, music tech startups, and event technology companies across West Africa. This is soft power built on technology platforms.
