ADNOC Blue Hydrogen Production

ADNOC is scaling blue hydrogen production from natural gas with carbon capture, positioning the UAE as a dual-pathway hydrogen exporter alongside green hydrogen from Masdar.

ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) is developing blue hydrogen production — producing hydrogen from natural gas while capturing and storing the resulting CO2. This complements the UAE's green hydrogen strategy through Masdar, creating a dual-pathway approach that can scale faster than pure green hydrogen. ADNOC's existing gas processing infrastructure and CCS capabilities provide a foundation for blue hydrogen at scale.

Blue hydrogen is controversial in climate circles (some argue it extends fossil fuel dependency), but it serves a pragmatic role: it can be produced at scale today using existing infrastructure while green hydrogen capacity ramps up. For the Gulf, blue hydrogen leverages enormous natural gas reserves and existing petrochemical expertise.

The dual green/blue hydrogen strategy gives the UAE flexibility: it can serve customers who prioritize immediate emissions reduction (blue hydrogen is cleaner than unabated gas) while building green hydrogen capacity for customers who require zero-carbon fuels. This portfolio approach to hydrogen production mirrors the broader Gulf energy transition strategy of maintaining hydrocarbon expertise while building renewable capabilities.
