Amorphous Metal

Non-crystalline metal alloys with high strength and low energy loss for transformers and specialized parts
Back to ForgeView interactive version

Amorphous metals (metallic glasses) lack long-range crystalline order, yielding properties such as high strength, elasticity, and low hysteresis loss. Applications include amorphous metal transformers (reduced core loss), armor, and implants. Experiments and limited use; amorphous metal transformers have reached commercial deployment. Research continues into new alloy compositions, processing for larger parts, and applications in medical and structural contexts.
