Algae-Based Biopolymers

Biodegradable plastics from fast-growing algae for apparel components and accessories
Back to FabricView interactive version

Algae-based biopolymers utilize rapid-growth algae biomass to produce biodegradable plastics and polymers for fashion applications including footwear soles, sequins, buttons, and hardware components. The technology harnesses algae's ability to absorb CO2 during growth, creating materials that are carbon-negative when the full lifecycle is considered, as the carbon remains sequestered in the material until biodegradation.

This innovation addresses the fashion industry's reliance on petroleum-based plastics while providing a regenerative material source. Algae can be cultivated in wastewater or non-arable land, requiring no freshwater or agricultural inputs, and grows much faster than traditional crops. Companies like Algiknit, Bloom, and Algaeing are developing algae-based materials for various fashion applications, with some products already commercialized for footwear and accessories.

The technology is particularly significant as brands seek carbon-negative materials to offset their emissions and meet net-zero commitments. As algae cultivation scales and processing costs decrease, algae-based biopolymers offer a pathway to replacing petroleum-based plastics throughout fashion supply chains while creating new revenue streams from carbon capture and wastewater treatment.
