Candidate Matching

Algorithms that match voters to candidates based on policy preferences and values
Back to CitiesView interactive version

In contemporary urban environments, navigating the complexities of political choices can be a daunting task for many citizens. The problem often lies in the sheer volume of information and the difficulty of aligning one's personal beliefs and necessities with the myriad of candidates and political parties. This is where Candidate Matching technology offers a transformative solution. By utilising an online platform based on comprehensive survey forms, it effectively bridges the gap between voters and the political representatives who best reflect their values and priorities.

Candidate Matching platforms operate by prompting voters to complete a detailed survey that encompasses a wide range of issues, from economic policies to social values and environmental concerns. Once the survey is completed, the platform employs sophisticated algorithms to analyse the responses. These algorithms compare the collected data against the profiles of candidates and parties, which are meticulously curated to include their stances on various issues. The result is a tailored list of political candidates and parties that closely match the voter's expressed viewpoints and needs.

In an era where urban populations are becoming increasingly diverse and politically fragmented, Candidate Matching provides a means to enhance democratic engagement and voter turnout. It empowers individuals by making the electoral process more accessible and personalised. Moreover, it fosters a more informed electorate, as voters are presented with options that align closely with their personal and community interests, thereby potentially reducing political apathy.

Furthermore, the broader implications of Candidate Matching extend to the political landscape itself. By enabling a more precise alignment of voter preferences with candidate positions, it can lead to more representative governance. Politicians and parties can gain insights into the nuanced priorities of their constituents, facilitating more responsive and effective policymaking. This feedback loop between the electorate and their representatives can significantly enhance the quality of urban governance.

Zero-Shot Recommendation AI Models for Efficient Job–Candidate Matching in Recruitment Process

mdpi.com

In the evolving realities of recruitment, the precision of job–candidate matching is crucial. This study explores the application of Zero-Shot Recommendation AI Models to enhance this matching process. Utilizing advanced pretrained models such as all-MiniLM-L6-v2 and applying similarity metrics like dot product and cosine similarity, we assessed their effectiveness in aligning job descriptions with candidate profiles. Our evaluations, based on Top-K Accuracy across various rankings, revealed a notable enhancement in matching accuracy compared to conventional methods. Specifically, the all-MiniLM-L6-v2 model with a chunk length of 768 exhibited outstanding performance, achieving a remarkable Top-1 accuracy of 3.35%, 55.45% for Top-100, and an impressive 81.11% for Top-500, establishing it as a highly effective tool for recruitment processes. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of these models, providing insights into their potential applications in real-world recruitment scenarios. Our findings highlight the capability of Zero-Shot Learning to address the dynamic requirements of the job market, offering a scalable, efficient, and adaptable solution for job–candidate matching and setting new benchmarks in recruitment efficiency.

Matching voters to parties: Voting advice applications and models of party choice

link.springer.com

Online voting advice applications (VAAs) have become very popular and may significantly influence voting behaviour. It is therefore important to ask which model of party choice VAAs follow. We establish that VAAs see party choice largely as proximity-based issue congruence, with some elements of the directional and salience models. We then assess how well VAAs follow the proximity model by comparing policy positions extracted from 13 VAAs in seven European countries with established policy measures from expert surveys and party manifestos. Party positions extracted from VAAs show strong convergent validity with left-right and economic positions, but compare less favourably with immigration and environment measures. The voting advice given to users is also inherently limited: VAAs mostly disregard accountability, salience, competence and non-policy factors; they treat policy positions and not outcomes as paramount; and they can be subject to strategic manipulation by political parties. As recommended by their designers, voters should treat these applications as tools and guides rather than as stringent recommendations.

Matching voters with parties and candidates : voting advice applications in a comparative perspective

cadmus.eui.eu

Voting Advice Applications – VAAs – have become a widespread online feature of electoral campaigns in Europe, attracting growing interest from social and political scientists. But until now, there has been no systematic and reliable comparative assessment of these tools. Previously published research on VAAs has resulted almost exclusively in national case studies. This lack of an integrated framework for analysis has made research on VAAs unable to serve the scientific goal of systematic knowledge accumulation. Against this background, Matching Voters With Parties and Candidates aims first at a comprehensive overview of the VAA phenomenon in a truly comparative perspective. Featuring the biggest number of European experts on the topic ever assembled, the book answers a number of open questions and addresses debates in VAA research. It also aims to bridge the gap between VAA research and related fields of political science.
