Space Forge (UK, NATO-backed) is developing reusable spacecraft platforms that manufacture advanced materials in microgravity. The absence of gravity-driven convection in space enables the growth of perfect semiconductor crystals, optical fibers, and pharmaceutical compounds with properties unachievable on Earth.
The initial focus is defense-grade semiconductors: radiation-hardened chips and advanced radar/communication components that benefit from the flawless crystal structures producible only in microgravity. The reusable platform design reduces the cost per kilogram of space-manufactured material, making commercial production economically viable.
Europe's approach to space manufacturing emphasizes reusability and return-to-Earth capability — the manufactured products must come back to be useful. This differentiates from ISS-based experiments that demonstrated scientific feasibility but not commercial production. Space Forge's NATO backing signals defense applications as the initial market, with commercial expansion following as costs decrease.
