BeiDou's constellation of 45+ satellites provides positioning, navigation, and timing services worldwide. Its distinguishing feature is two-way short message communication — users can send and receive texts via satellite, useful for maritime emergencies and remote areas without cell coverage.
China is aggressively promoting BeiDou adoption in the Global South. The system is integrated into DJI agricultural drones (±2.5cm precision), Southeast Asian port management systems, and African land-use planning tools. Subsidies and bundled deals with Chinese infrastructure projects accelerate adoption.
The geopolitical dimension is significant. GPS is controlled by the US military. BeiDou gives China — and countries aligned with it — an independent positioning infrastructure. As of 2025, BeiDou signals are available across Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
