The Altay main battle tank represents Turkey's first indigenous heavy armored vehicle, featuring a 120mm smoothbore gun, composite armor, and a remote-operated weapon station. First deliveries to the Turkish Land Forces occurred on October 28, 2025, with mass production ramping toward 250 units over five years. The Altay was developed by BMC using technology initially transferred from South Korea's K2 Black Panther program, but has been extensively redesigned with indigenous subsystems.
The program's most critical achievement is the BATU indigenous diesel engine, which completed factory acceptance tests in late 2025. Like the fighter engine challenge, tank powerplant sovereignty is rare — only a handful of nations produce their own tank engines. The BATU engine eliminates dependence on foreign suppliers and represents a major milestone in Turkey's land systems sovereignty. Alongside the Altay, production of the Altuğ 8x8 next-generation armored combat vehicle has begun at 10 units per month.
The Altay positions Turkey to replace aging Leopard 2A4 and M60 tanks with an indigenous platform that can be upgraded and exported without third-party approval constraints. Export potential is significant, particularly for Middle Eastern and Central Asian nations seeking alternatives to Western and Russian armor platforms.
