Iran's medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) drone fleet — anchored by the Mohajer-6 and Ababil series — provides indigenous persistent surveillance and light precision strike capability. The Mohajer-6 carries electro-optical/infrared sensors and can deliver precision-guided munitions, with an endurance of approximately 24 hours and a ceiling around 18,000 feet. These are not peer-equivalent to US MQ-9 Reapers but are operationally effective and dramatically cheaper.
The program originated in the Iran-Iraq War era, making Iran one of the earliest adopters of military drone technology. Decades of iterative development have produced a mature industrial base capable of serial production. The Mohajer-6 has been deployed in domestic military exercises and transferred to allied forces. Iran has also developed the Shahed-129, a larger MALE platform with armed capability and longer endurance.
Strategically, the MALE drone program complements the loitering munition fleet by providing the reconnaissance layer that identifies and designates targets. The export dimension is significant: Iran has become a competitive supplier of armed drones to countries unable or unwilling to purchase Western or Chinese alternatives, carving out a niche in the lower end of the global MALE drone market.
