Active Protection Systems

Vehicle-mounted radar and interceptors that defeat incoming munitions before impact
Back to AegisView interactive version

Active protection systems (APS) are vehicle-mounted defense systems that use radar (detection systems) and interceptors (projectiles or explosives) to defeat incoming munitions (attacking weapons like rockets and missiles) before they hit the vehicle, where APS suites like Trophy and Iron Fist use multi-band radar (radar operating at multiple frequencies) and countermeasures (defensive weapons) to detect and destroy RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) or ATGMs (anti-tank guided missiles) within milliseconds (thousandths of a second), dramatically improving vehicle survivability (ability to survive attacks) in dense battlefields (areas with many threats), creating defensive systems that can automatically detect and destroy incoming threats, providing a last line of defense that can save vehicles and crews from destruction, making armored vehicles much more survivable against modern anti-tank weapons.

This innovation addresses the vulnerability of armored vehicles to modern anti-tank weapons, where armor alone isn't sufficient. By providing active defense, these systems can intercept threats. Defense contractors are developing these systems.

The technology is particularly significant for vehicle protection, where APS can dramatically improve survivability. As anti-tank weapons improve, APS becomes increasingly important. However, ensuring reliability, managing costs, and addressing safety concerns remain challenges. The technology represents an important evolution in vehicle protection, with some systems already deployed. Success is already being achieved, with APS systems protecting vehicles in combat. Active protection systems are mature technology that is already saving lives in operational use.
