Content Authenticity

Content authenticity is the property of a piece of digital content having a verifiable origin and an unbroken chain of provenance from creator to current state. In the AI era, content authenticity has become urgent because generative models can produce synthetic text, images, audio, and video that is indistinguishable from human-authored work, eroding the default assumption that content is authentic unless proven otherwise. Modern content-authenticity stacks combine cryptographic signing (proving who created or processed the content), provenance metadata (recording what transformations were applied, by whom, and when), tamper detection (flagging edits after signing), and watermarking (embedding imperceptible signals that survive copying and editing). The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) is the leading open standard, adopted across major creative-software vendors and increasingly by AI model providers for marking generated outputs. The EU AI Act's Article 50(2) Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content has made machine-readable authenticity marking a near-term regulatory requirement in Europe. The field also overlaps with broader media forensics and provenance research, including steganographic watermarks, perceptual hashing, and deepfake detection.
