India is aggressively deploying agricultural drones for crop spraying, monitoring, and mapping across its vast agricultural landscape. The government's promotion of drone-based crop spraying is particularly significant for India, where 86% of farms are under 2 hectares (smallholdings) — too small for tractors in many cases but perfectly suited for drone-based precision agriculture. By 2025, agricultural drones were integrated into mainstream precision farming practices.

The drone deployment is complemented by AI-powered pest detection systems. The government's AI tool for pest identification, used by over 10,000 extension workers, allows farmers to photograph pests and receive mitigation recommendations. The system supports 66 crops and over 432 pests. Companies like DeHaat, CropIn, and Fasal provide AI-powered farm analytics platforms that integrate drone imaging data with satellite imagery and soil sensors.

For India's 150 million smallholder farms, agricultural drones represent a leapfrog technology — jumping directly from manual labor to precision agriculture without the intermediate stage of large-scale mechanization. The technology reduces pesticide usage (drones apply chemicals more precisely than manual spraying), lowers costs, and improves yields. India's agricultural drone sector benefits from the country's growing drone manufacturing ecosystem (drone-as-a-service companies like Garuda Aerospace, IoTechWorld Avigation) and supportive regulations.
