Autonomous Organizations & Services

Service providers coordinated by smart contracts instead of traditional corporate hierarchies
Back to LatticeView interactive version

Autonomous organizations and services are service providers—whether human or machine—coordinated by smart contracts (self-executing code) rather than traditional corporate hierarchies, creating new organizational models where rules are encoded in code and executed automatically. In practice this ranges from DAO-style treasuries (decentralized autonomous organizations managing funds) and service collectives (groups providing services) to semi-automated custodians (automated asset management), underwriters (automated risk assessment), and market operators that rely on AI-assisted governance frameworks for treasury optimization (managing funds), audits (verifying operations), and policy simulations (testing governance changes), creating organizations that can operate with minimal human intervention.

This innovation addresses the limitations of traditional organizational structures, where hierarchies can be inefficient and centralized. By using smart contracts and AI, these organizations can operate more efficiently. DAOs, companies, and research institutions are developing these models.

The technology is particularly significant for enabling new organizational models, where autonomous organizations could improve efficiency and reduce costs. As these models expand, they could transform how organizations operate. However, ensuring governance, managing complexity, and addressing legal questions remain challenges. The technology represents an important evolution in organizational design, but requires continued development to address governance and legal challenges. Success could enable new organizational models, but the technology must overcome governance and legal hurdles. The development of autonomous organizations is an active area of experimentation.
