Europe has over 30 battery gigafactory projects at various stages of development, with planned capacity exceeding 1,000 GWh by 2030. Northvolt (Sweden) operates Europe's first homegrown lithium-ion cell factory, while CATL (Germany), Samsung SDI (Hungary), and LG Energy Solution (Poland) are building or expanding European production.
The EU Battery Regulation (2023) drives this buildout: it requires batteries sold in Europe to meet recycling content targets, carbon footprint declarations, and supply chain due diligence — creating a regulatory advantage for local producers who can demonstrate compliance. From 2027, batteries must contain minimum percentages of recycled cobalt, lithium, nickel, and lead.
The strategic goal is reducing Europe's dependency on Asian battery supply chains for its electric vehicle transition. With European automakers (VW, BMW, Stellantis, Renault) committing to all-electric lineups, securing battery supply is as critical as securing oil supply was in the previous century. European battery production also enables integration with the continent's renewable energy and grid storage needs.
