# Turing Space

The parameter region of a reaction-diffusion system in which Turing instability produces spatial patterns. Adjacent to — but not part of — the AI/ML Turing family in this vocabulary.
In mathematical biology, a Turing space is the region in a reaction-diffusion system's parameter space in which the homogeneous steady state is unstable to small spatial perturbations — a Turing instability. Within this region, the interplay between differential diffusion of one chemical species and the reaction kinetics of multiple species amplifies periodic spatial modes, producing the stripes, spots, and labyrinths described by Alan Turing in his 1952 paper "The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis." Outside the Turing space, the same system relaxes smoothly to a uniform state. The size of a reaction-diffusion system's Turing space — and the conditions that enlarge it — are the subject of active research in developmental biology, where the apparent narrowness of the parameter region has long been a puzzle for evolutionary explanations of biological pattern formation.

This entry is recorded as adjacent to the existing Turing-family entries in this vocabulary (Turing Test, Turing Completeness, Universal Turing Machine, Church-Turing Thesis, Neural Turing Machine). Those refer to the computational and cognitive legacy of Alan Turing; Turing space, by contrast, is a parameter-space concept from his morphogenesis work, used in mathematical biology rather than in machine learning. The term is not in scope for the AI/ML canon and is included here for cross-reference completeness.
