Dumping a long, unread AI-generated reply on a colleague where a short human answer would do, offloading the verification work onto them.
A "slop grenade" is a long AI-generated response pasted into a chat or email where a short human answer would do, shifting the work of finding the point onto whoever receives it. The phrase comes from noslopgrenade.com, a single-page site built by developer Stefan Neubig in 2026 and modeled on the earlier etiquette page nohello.net. It illustrates the failure with a Slack exchange: asked whether to use Redis or Memcached, an AI-written reply runs several paragraphs of hedged comparison instead of naming one option and the reason for it.

The term reached a wider audience in September 2026, when Shopify CEO Tobias Lutke used it on Shane Parrish's podcast The Knowledge Project to describe a side effect of his own year-old mandate that AI use be a baseline expectation at the company. Lutke said employees were letting AI "go nuts" on pull requests and emails and approving the output without reading it. Colleagues ended up reviewing code that "doesn't look right," or running a long AI-written email back through another model just to compress it. Shopify's internal coding agent, River, was already generating roughly half of the company's production pull requests at the time.

Slop grenade names a narrower failure than generic AI "slop." The content is passed off as a considered human answer, and it pushes verification and interpretation work onto the reader. It overlaps with what researchers call "workslop": a survey by BetterUp Labs and the Stanford Social Media Lab found more than half of US desk workers had sent unvetted AI output to colleagues. Recipients spent an average of 3.4 hours a month fixing it.
