# Forward-Deployed Engineer (FDE)

A software engineer embedded on-site with a customer to build and ship production systems directly against their real workflow.
A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who embeds directly at a customer's site rather than building general-purpose features from a home office. The FDE learns the customer's data, systems, and workflow, then writes and ships production code against that specific environment, often staying on-site for weeks or months until the system is actually in use. The role differs from a solutions engineer or sales engineer, who typically demos a product and hands off implementation to a separate delivery team.

Palantir Technologies created the role and the "FDE" title around 2005 to 2006, when it found that shipping data-integration software to defense and intelligence agencies did not work on its own. The software was capable, but customers could not operationalize it without help. Palantir's internal term for the role was "Delta," distinct from "Echo," which handled problem framing. For much of its first decade the company employed more forward-deployed engineers than product engineers. Shyam Sankar, an early Palantir employee, is widely credited with turning the practice into a repeatable model.

Starting around 2024, frontier AI labs adopted the same model to get large language models working inside enterprise customers, where deployment, not model capability, had become the bottleneck. OpenAI built a Forward Deployed Engineering team and later formed a separate deployment venture. Anthropic runs a comparable group under the name Applied AI. Job postings for the role rose sharply through 2025 and 2026 as Google, Databricks, Cohere, and consulting firms including Accenture and EY set up similar practices. The title moved from a Palantir-specific term into general industry use.
