Cognitive virus is a model that treats the spread of large language model (LLM) use through a population as an epidemiological process rather than a simple adoption curve. Ricard Solé, Michael Levin, and seven co-authors proposed it in "Large-Language Models as a Cognitive Virus" (arXiv:2609.03344, 3 September 2026). The paper borrows the mathematics used to model infectious disease and applies it to how LLM use spreads through social contact, habit formation, and cultural reinforcement. Users move between three states: uncoupled (no regular LLM use), coupled (regular but reversible use), and persistently dependent (use that has displaced the underlying cognitive skill).

The model's central claim is that these transitions can produce tipping points. Below a critical threshold, adoption is gradual and reversible. Once transmission, social reinforcement, and slow recovery combine past that threshold, small increases in adoption can trigger a rapid population-wide shift into persistent dependence. The authors describe this as a form of technological lock-in linked to abrupt, measurable loss of the cognitive competence being offloaded, such as writing, calculation, or recall. The framing treats LLM dependence as a collective, dynamical phenomenon rather than a purely individual choice, closer to public health than to product adoption.

The same framework proposes "cognitive immunization" as a countermeasure: conditions such as reduced exposure or preserved opportunities to practice a skill without AI assistance, which lower transmission and keep the coupled state reversible before it hardens into dependence. The paper is a physics and complex-systems preprint, not a controlled study of real users, so its transitions are illustrative dynamics rather than measured population data. It has drawn early attention for offering a quantitative vocabulary for a concern, widespread cognitive reliance on AI, that had previously mostly been discussed in qualitative terms.
