# Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence

A framework proposing that AGI arrives as a plural, social ensemble of agents, humans, and institutions rather than one dominant model.
Artificial symbiotic intelligence is a framework laid out in a September 2026 essay published by the Google DeepMind Institute. The authors are Benjamin Bratton (Visiting Researcher at Google, Director of Antikythera), Blaise Aguera y Arcas (VP and Fellow at Google), and James Manyika (President, Research, Labs, Technology and Society at Google). The essay, "Artificial symbiotic intelligence: Agents, AGI and the orchestration of many minds," argues that AGI is likely to arrive as a plural, social system of models, tools, institutions, and people, rather than one dominant model.

The essay sets this idea against the Singularity narrative, in which a single AI bootstraps itself to isolated superintelligence. It states that "capability does not live solely within the isolated weights of a single AI model, but in the ensemble": the harnesses, shared knowledge bases, interaction protocols, and the humans using them. Alignment, in this framing, is "the co-evolutionary outcome of deep, organic contact between humans, agents, and institutions," not a constraint engineered in beforehand. The essay also introduces decomposable agency and agent institutions, whose rules generate outputs regardless of who fills a given role.

The essay is a company-published conceptual argument, not a peer-reviewed result. The term is unrelated to the acronym ASI, used for artificial superintelligence, a hypothesis about one system surpassing all human cognitive ability. The DeepMind Institute essay argues against that scenario and for a social, distributed transition instead.
