China is merging large language models with physical robots — Unitree's CEO predicts general-purpose AI models for robots by end of 2025

Embodied intelligence combines the reasoning capabilities of foundation models (like GPT or Qwen) with robot perception and motor control. Instead of programming robots for specific tasks, embodied AI lets them understand natural language instructions and figure out the physical actions needed.

The 15th Five-Year Plan names embodied AI as a 'future industry,' putting it alongside quantum computing and fusion in priority. Unitree, Agibot, and several university labs are building systems where a robot can watch a human perform a task once and then replicate it.

The gap between demo videos and reliable industrial deployment is vast. Current embodied AI systems work in controlled environments but struggle with novel objects, unexpected obstacles, and the kind of improvisation that human workers do unconsciously. The race is to close that gap before labor shortages force the issue.
