Motional is a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv (formerly Delphi), combining Hyundai's vehicle manufacturing with Aptiv's autonomous driving software. The company operates an autonomous ride-hail service using custom-built Ioniq 5 robotaxis equipped with 30+ sensors (lidar, radar, cameras) in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, with commercial launches planned through partnerships with Uber and Lyft.

Motional's approach differs from Waymo's by leveraging Hyundai's manufacturing scale — rather than retrofitting existing vehicles, Motional's Ioniq 5 robotaxis are built with autonomous hardware integrated from the factory floor. This allows for cleaner sensor integration, better thermal management, and lower per-unit costs as production scales.

The robotaxi market is consolidating around a few well-funded players (Waymo, Cruise/GM, Motional, Baidu Apollo), and Motional's Hyundai backing gives it a vehicle manufacturing advantage that pure-tech companies lack.
