# Canadian Genomics Strategy

Genome Canada's new R&D wave tackles national challenges across health, agriculture, and environment with large-scale genomics projects addressing antimicrobial resistance, crop resilience, and precision medicine.
- Technology Readiness Level: 7/9
- Impact: 4/5
- Investment: 4/5
Genome Canada has launched a new wave of research and development projects under the Canadian Genomics Strategy, targeting major national challenges including antimicrobial resistance, agricultural resilience, environmental DNA monitoring, and precision medicine. The program funds large-scale genomics R&D that integrates sequencing technology, bioinformatics, and AI to generate actionable insights across multiple sectors.

Genomics matters for Canada because the country has world-class capability in both the underlying science and the computational infrastructure needed to analyze genomic data at scale. Canadian genomics research contributes to global efforts in understanding and treating genetic diseases, developing climate-resilient crops, and monitoring biodiversity through environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling — a technique pioneered in part by Canadian researchers.

Strategically, genomics is a platform technology that underpins multiple sectors of the Canadian economy. The convergence of declining sequencing costs, improving AI analysis, and growing regulatory acceptance of genomic data is creating commercial opportunities across healthcare (pharmacogenomics, diagnostics), agriculture (crop and livestock improvement), and environmental management (species monitoring, biosecurity). Canada's integrated approach through Genome Canada positions it to capture value across these applications.
