China operates the world's most active deep-sea robotics program, with autonomous underwater vehicles complementing the Fendouzhe manned submersible

Chinese research institutes in Dongguan, Shenyang, and Qingdao are developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for pipeline inspection, mineral surveying, and marine biology. These robots operate at depths and durations impossible for manned vehicles.

The technology complements China's manned deep-sea program (Fendouzhe, Jiaolong) by enabling persistent, wide-area ocean floor mapping. Applications include deep-sea mining site assessment, submarine cable inspection, and underwater archaeology.

China's push into underwater robotics aligns with its deep-sea mining ambitions. The International Seabed Authority has granted China more deep-sea exploration contracts than any other country. Autonomous robots are the enabling technology for surveying these vast claim areas.
