# Copernicus Earth Observation Program

The world's largest Earth observation program — free, full, and open data from Sentinel satellites monitoring climate, oceans, atmosphere, and land use
- Technology Readiness Level: 9/9
- Impact: 5/5
- Investment: 3/5
Copernicus is the EU's Earth observation program, operating a fleet of Sentinel satellites that monitor land, ocean, atmosphere, climate, and emergency situations. All data is provided free, full, and open — making it the world's most accessible Earth observation dataset.

The program generates 12+ terabytes of data daily across six thematic services: land monitoring, marine environment, atmosphere, climate change, security, and emergency management. The data is used by over 400,000 registered users for applications ranging from precision agriculture to urban planning to insurance risk assessment.

Copernicus represents a distinctive European approach to space: publicly funded infrastructure with free data access, creating economic value through downstream applications rather than data sales. The European Commission estimates Copernicus generates €5-8 in economic benefits for every €1 invested, primarily through the ecosystem of companies and services built on its open data.
