Korea's K2 Black Panther tank and K9 Thunder howitzer have secured over $17B in export orders from Poland, Australia, Norway, and others, making Korea a top-5 global arms exporter.

The K2 Black Panther main battle tank and K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer have become Korea's flagship defense exports. Poland ordered 1,000 K2 tanks and 672 K9 howitzers in a deal worth over $12B — the largest Korean defense export in history. Australia, Norway, Estonia, Finland, Egypt, and Turkey have also purchased or licensed K9 production. Korean defense exports surged past $17B in cumulative orders by 2025.

The K2 features a 120mm smoothbore gun, composite armor with ERA, active protection systems, and a 1,500hp engine enabling speeds of 70 km/h — competitive with the German Leopard 2A7 and American M1A2 Abrams at a significantly lower price point. The K9 is the most exported self-propelled howitzer in the world, with over 1,800 units delivered or on order across 8 countries.

Korea's defense export surge was catalyzed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which created urgent demand for NATO-standard equipment that traditional Western suppliers (with depleted inventories and slow production lines) couldn't fill. Korea's ability to deliver at scale and speed — the same industrial attributes that drive its semiconductor and shipbuilding success — made it the partner of choice for countries rearming in a hurry.
