India's defense production and export sector has undergone a dramatic transformation. The country, historically the world's largest arms importer, is rapidly building indigenous defense manufacturing capability and growing its exports. Defense exports reached Rs 23,622 crore (approximately $2.8 billion), with the US, France, and Armenia among the biggest export markets. India now exports defense equipment to over 100 countries.

The shift is driven by multiple policy initiatives: defense procurement rules mandating indigenous content, two dedicated defense industrial corridors (in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu), increased FDI limits in defense manufacturing, and a positive list of items banned from import to force domestic production. Key export products include BrahMos missiles, Pinaka rocket systems, Akash air defense missiles, AK-203 rifles (manufactured under license), and various naval platforms.

Operation Sindoor in May 2025 was a turning point — the Indian military deployed a range of domestically developed systems in operational conditions, proving that indigenous equipment performs under real-world stress. This operational validation has boosted international buyer confidence. The defense production target is Rs 3 lakh crore ($36 billion) by 2029, with exports targeted at Rs 50,000 crore ($6 billion). India is positioning itself as a 'democratic alternative' defense supplier for countries that want to reduce dependence on Russian or Chinese equipment.
