We collected all 31 editions and checked each dated placement against what happened. per technology (D21). For each of the 199 technologies with a gradable placement, two agents wrote an adoption timeline blind: what the label means, the test for mainstream use, the year it reached 5%, the year it became mainstream, and whether it was abandoned. Each timeline cites its sources. Mainstream means at least 20% of target users or households in major markets, at least 50% of new units for a device feature, or routine use by 20% of an industry (D16). A placement is a **hit** when the technology was mainstream by the placed year plus 2, earlier included. It is a **partial** when it got there 3 to 5 years late, or reached 5% by the placed year. Anything else is a **miss**. Code applies the rule, so anyone can re-run it. The two sets of verdicts agreed beyond chance at kappa 0.66 on 409 placements (D11 asks for 0.6). A third agent settled the timelines behind [86](/hindsight/gartner/hype-cycle/audit) disputed placements (D20). An audit agent then re-checked a fixed sample of [50](/hindsight/gartner/hype-cycle/audit) agreed verdicts: 45 confirmed, 2 corrected, 3 contested. That is an error rate of 10%, and every interval on this page is widened by it (D28). ## 60% of graded placements were hits, with a 95% interval of 45% to 74% 240 hits, 73 partials and 90 misses out of 403. The count-only interval is 55% to 64%; the audit error widens it to 45% to 74%. 3 placements had labels too vague to grade and 3 are still contested. Reading the midpoint of the band instead could lower it. ## Most misses never arrived at all Of the 90 misses, 76 are technologies that had not gone mainstream by 2026 or were abandoned. 11 did go mainstream, more than 5 years after the placed year. For 3, the two timelines disagree on whether it arrived. The rule does not penalise arriving early (D16). 47 of the 240 hits were technologies already mainstream, by our timeline, in the year of the edition that placed them. ## 54% of entries were gone from the next edition Of the 911 entries in editions 1995 to 2024, 489 did not appear the following year. Only 3 entries in 31 years carry Gartner’s own obsolete-before-plateau marker. Leaving the chart does not count as a miss here, and some dropped technologies came back in a later edition. Between editions, 59 entries were renamed, 45 moved to a shorter time to plateau and 22 to a longer one. We keep each edition’s placement as its own claim, so a technology that was moved still has its earlier placement graded. ## What the Hype Cycle is good and bad at ### Where it held up - Near-term calls. 58 of 73 placements of less than 2 years were hits. - Picking real technologies. 78% of graded placements were a hit or a partial: the technology reached at least 5% use, or mainstream within 5 years of the placed year. - Two to five years out, 61% were hits, interval 44% to 77%. ### Where it did not - Long calls. Placements of 5 to 10 years hit 45% of the time, interval 26% to 64%, even read at the top of the band. - Saying what will not arrive. 76 of 90 misses never went mainstream, and the chart marked 3 entries in 31 years as obsolete before plateau. - Continuity. 54% of entries left the chart the next year, with no marker on the chart saying why. ## What this does not measure - The phases. Where an entry sits on the curve is recorded ([D14](https://github.com/envisioning/hindsight/blob/main/docs/DECISIONS.md#d14-hype-cycle-phase-from-measured-boundaries)) but not graded. This page grades the time-to-plateau marker only. - Gartner’s own meaning of the plateau. Our test for mainstream use is our rule ([D16](https://github.com/envisioning/hindsight/blob/main/docs/DECISIONS.md#d16-grading-rule-for-year-placed-forecasts-revised-supersedes-d10)). Gartner may have meant something else by a label or a band, and the reading each timeline used is on its claim page. - Recent editions. A window closes at the placed year plus 5, so the last edition that can be graded is 2019 for less than 2 years, 2016 for 2 to 5 years and 2011 for 5 to 10 years. The latest graded placement is from 2016. The 2026 edition has no public entry list yet. - Other publishers. This is one series.
